Thanks for sending
this Gary.
My advice is for LA
(and others) to expand their viewpoint to look at all the environmental impacts
of materials management (not just zero weight to landfills and incinerators). I
believe that issues should not be viewed in isolation and the we need a
comprehensive, holistic approach to minimize system-wide environmental impacts.
The BEES model (http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/oae/software/bees/model.html)
is a good start as is the work of Jeff Morris, as shown on http://www.zerowaste.com/default.htm
(access to the studies require signing in, but it's for
free).

wishes,

COUNTING
DOWN TO ZERO: CITY OF LOS ANGELES ZERO WASTE PLAN
WORKSHOPS Did you
know that Los Angeles currently keeps 62% of its waste out of landfills?
While we are a leader throughout the world in waste diversion, we can do
more! In August,
we worked with community members throughout the City of Los Angeles to bring
them into the process of developing a ZERO
WASTE PLAN. This
month, we need your participation to help us
ESTABLISH OUR ZERO WASTE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES for Los
Angeles and the region. Invite your friends and neighbors and
together let's plan for a zero waste LA! If you need an interpreter,
please let us know 72 hours in advance of the workshop you will attend and we
will gladly make arrangements. Start the path to zero waste by
bringing you own reusable cup to one of these September workshops.
REMEMBER IT'S NOT A PLAN WITHOUT YOU! Upcoming Workshops --
