[GreenYes] reusable vs single-use

I received the following query from a visitor to our site. 

"I'm interested in tracking down experts and/or research who can compare the long-term environmental benefits of reusable plastic containers vs. single-use. That is, I'm guessing there's an environmental downside to both, but am looking for someone who can tell me which is the lesser of two evils, and what the best options are both for adults packing their own lunches to eat at work and for those packing lunches for school kids."
