Somerville initiated collection in December 1975, and Marblehead in January 1976. Palo Alto initiated its pilot program to about 20% of its households at the end of 1978, and expanded to Citywide as a result of an SB650 grant from the state of CA in 1980. Santa Rosa and El Cerrito CA both started multi-material curbside collection with funding from CA waste management board in 1979. We introduced the 'stacking bin' in the Santa Rosa program, and for those of you that know him, Stu Clark was hired as the recycling collection driver in Santa Rosa at that time. Eric, In addition to the programs mentioned already (Boulder, CO; Madison, WI; and Modesto, CA), other early multi-material curbside recycling programs were: a.. San Luis Obispo, CA b.. Palo Alto, CA c.. Fresno, CA - MARS program started in 1976 or 77 d.. Davis, CA e.. Berkeley, CA - 1972 Also, the USEPA funded model curbside recycling programs in Somerville and Marblehead, MA in the 1970s. I don't know the starting dates for all of these. We claim to be "one of the first 20"... don't know where Grogan came up with that one. I have heard that the first multi-material collection program was in California sometime around 1970? I think Gary Liss told me that... hey, Gary, you know the history on this?
