[greenyes] [jtrnet] Lay's (Frito) packaging Q - Kansas Market

Anyone know if this package is recyclable?

A new (to this market anyway -Topeka, KS) Lay's product called 'Stax' - a
'Pringle' like potato chip snack product features a mobius symbol and
'Please Recycle' on the label on the main tube.

The lid is marked as a '4', however my confusion is the main container is
marked as a '2' and a '7'. It appears the main container may be a
co-extruded product with the blue - presumably '2' on the outside, and the
interior being black - presumably the '7' and appearing completely
inseparable.

Question:

What is the proper way to handle/process the tube.

Thanks,

Rodney

The Federal Trade Commission issued guides concerning Environmental
Marketing Claims. The following is an excerpt from its website:

"d) Recyclable: It is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by
implication, that a product or package is recyclable. A product or
package should not be marketed as recyclable unless it can be collected,
separated or otherwise recovered from the solid waste stream for reuse,
or in the manufacture or assembly of another package or product, through
an established recycling program. Unqualified claims of recyclability
for a product or package may be made if the entire product or package,
excluding minor incidental components, is recyclable."

While I think you have a good case I suggest that you read all the
applicable guide sections before approaching the company. They provide
many illustrations of acceptable and deceptive practices.

There are a lot of #1 thru #7 mixed bales markets available now, especially
export to China or Recycle America's new Chicago plant. I'd guess they'd be able to handle the material. I also guess from seeing the commercial that this is a blow molded container with an MDX-6 Nylon barrier layer in it to
make it fit the #7 Other code. The #4 LDPE cap might be able to be included too. tom
