Another thought from a consumer standpoint: Add this to my list of products I don't buy because of poor packaging. Reminds me of the orange juice jugs, I think Tropicana, that are "#7 OTHER / #2 Compatible HDPE and Nylon." Also Welchs juice in the little #7 bottles, some ketchup in #7 bottles (most brands are #1. Strangely most Heinz is #1 but some are other plastics...perhaps due to different bottling facilities.) I'm sure theres others. :) Stephen N. Can you describe what it will be recycled into? Who is your buyer, what do they make out of it, and are they paying you for "mixed hard rigid" or are you paying them to take it? The following is an excerpt from its website: "d) Recyclable: It is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by implication, that a product or package is recyclable. A product or package should not be marketed as recyclable unless it can be collected, separated or otherwise recovered from the solid waste stream for reuse, or in the manufacture or assembly of another package or product, through an established recycling program. Unqualified claims of recyclability for a product or package may be made if the entire product or package, excluding minor incidental components, is recyclable." While I think you have a good case I suggest that you read all the applicable guide sections before approaching the company. They provide many illustrations of acceptable and deceptive practices. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/grnrule/guides980427.htm Jim Gilbert Empire State Development Environmental Services Unit 400 Andrews Street, Suite 710 Rochester, NY 14604 585.325.1944 Fax 585.325.6505 jgilbert@no.address >------------------------------------------ From: thomas.heil@no.address To: "Public and non-profit recycling market developers" <jtrnet@no.address> Subject: RE: [jtrnet] Lay's (Frito) packaging question - Kansas Market Date: Mon, 9 May 2005 13:59:58 -0400 There are a lot of #1 thru #7 mixed bales markets available now, especially export to China or Recycle America's new Chicago plant. I'd guess they'd be able to handle the material. I also guess from seeing the commercial that this is a blow molded container with an MDX-6 Nylon barrier layer in it to make it fit the #7 Other code. The #4 LDPE cap might be able to be included too. tom Gary Liss 916-652-7850 Fax: 916-652-0485 www.garyliss.com |
