------------------------- Norwegian industry urges speedier landfill ban Environment Daily 1888, 30/05/05 ------------------------- Norway's employers' organisation NHO has urged the government to move forward by two years its proposed 2009 deadline for a total ban on landfilling biodegradable waste (ED 11/06/04 http://www.environmentdaily.com/articles/index.cfm?action=article&ref=16852). Noting that such a ban is already in force in neighbouring Sweden, NHO director (and former environment minister) Siri Bjerke told Aftenposten newspaper on Monday that the earlier deadline would "work to the benefit of Norway's climate balance sheet". The government is proceeding with the legislation despite sharp cuts in estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from waste landfills announced earlier this year (ED 20/01/05 http://www.environmentdaily.com/articles/index.cfm?action=article&ref=18055).
