HI, I would imagine that boric-acid treated cotton filled and cotton covered (or hemp) futon mattresses could be composted. Boric acid-treated cotton batting provides not only the benefits of durability, comfort and safety but also may offer some protection for those who suffer allergies from irritants such as mold, mildew and dust mites. See http://www.natbat.com/docs/FAQ.htm You could have bases made for the futons that would not ever need to be thrown out. I have heard that Goodwill and Salvation Army do NOT take used mattresses or pillows. Regards!
