Based upon data from 21 Australian metropolitan councils, the following data was compiled for recycling rates: Household net yield (kg/hh/week) - Total curbside recyclables collected per household, excluding gross contamination: Baseline >4.0 Target >5.5 Per capita net yield (kg/pp/week) - Curbside recyclables collected per household, excluding gross contamination: Baseline >1.5 Target >2.1 Net diversion rate (%) - Total proportion of domestic waste stream diverted to recycling Baseline >19 Target >29 Contamination rate (%) - Contaminants placed in recycling bin by householders Baseline NA Target Service cost per household (A$/hh/yr) - Annual cost of collection and MRF acceptance of curbside recyclables per household Target = 24 - 49 Tonnage cost (A$/t) - Cost per net tonne of curbside recyclables collected and accepted at MRF (excluding council admin costs) Target = 143 - 225. A number of higher performing Councils were found to be capturing between 0.32 and 0.39 tonnes of curbside recyclables per household per year. The study also found that Councils most likely to be achieving better recycling tend to provide a 'three-bin' system for garbage, mixed containers and paper respectively; or a 120-litre garbage bin and 240-litre (split or co-mingled) recycling bin. They also provide at least bieekly collections for PET, HDPE, steel, aluminium, glass, paper, cardboard, and paperboard and have an established community education strategy.
