Bassett St Suite 200 Madison WI 53703 August 28, 2004 Zero Waste: Once an idealistic vision, then a realistic goal and now a planning framework for communities and sustainable enterprise. This one-day event is a gathering of Zero Waste experts and advocates from across North America and around the globe. GRRN, as the U.S. affiliate of the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA), is working to organize this nation to become an international leader in advancing Zero Waste policies, planning and practices. Attendees will be collaborating to move the ideas of Zero Waste into action. The agenda is built around three interrelated objectives: Articulate a shared vocabulary and commonly understood policy framework around Zero Waste; Provide a forum for networking to increase cohesion and facilitate on-going collaboration; Develop an action plan to further advance our framework in the realms of public policy and corporate practice. Long-time GRRN participants New recruits, including students and youth Community activists fighting landfills or incinerators and advocating the Zero Waste alternative Allies in GRRN campaigns Anyone interested in learning more about Zero Waste If you are an advocate working for Zero Waste, curious, or even skeptical about this new movement, your participation will be essential. Conference Agenda 8:00 – Registration 8:30 – 8:45 Welcome and Opening Remarks from Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown (invited) 8:45 – 10:00 Plenary panel: Beyond Recycling Eric Lombardi, Eco-Cycle What is Zero Waste? Ann Leonard, Global Alliance for Incineration Alternatives Environmental health and the need for Zero Waste in the Global South Omar Frellia, Green Worker Cooperatives and Sustainable South Bronx Zero Waste, jobs, economic development and environmental justice 10:00 – 10:15 Break 10:15 – 11:45 Panel: Essential Elements of Zero Waste Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Design for the Environment (DFE) End landfilling and incineration Jobs and community economic development End subsidies for wasting 11:55—12:40 Lunch and presentation by Dr. Paul Connett (invited) Dr. Connett is a Professor of Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in New York and is an international Zero Waste Advocate. In the last 15 years, Dr. Connett has visited approximately 70 countries to work against incineration and towards Zero Waste. 12:50 – 1:50 Facilitated Group Discussion: Obstacles and Opportunities An interactive, facilitated discussion for all attendees to discuss the concepts of Zero Waste and the opportunities and challenges to implementing Zero Waste in the US. 2:00 – 3:00 Zero Waste In Action: Breakout Sessions (Across the street in City Hall) Zero Waste Community plans and programs Zero Waste Businesses EPR in practice Resource Recovery parks 3:10 - 4:30 Breakout Sessions: Moving to Action Planning groups will meet to discuss the four primary focus issues for GRRN and the US Zero Waste movement.
