* * * ACTION ALERT: OPPOSE WEAKENING ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWS FOR GARBAGE INCINERATION! * * * On Tuesday, the House will vote on the dirty, dangerous energy bill that would harm consumers, public health and the environment. It leaves American consumers at the mercy of big power companies and threatens our coasts and public lands. In addition, they will be voting on H.R. 4513, the Renewable Energy Project Siting Improvement Act. H .R. 4513 would significantly weaken critical environmental review provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for a wide range of energy projects. The bill's intentionally broad definition of "renewable energy" leaves the door open to weakened reviews for environmentally harmful garbage incineration, hydroelectric and even oil and gas drilling projects. This bill severely restricts input of local communities and states in siting garbage incinerators, and in the development of existing oil and gas leases in currently protected areas. We need to urge the House to oppose this bill, which could increase garbage incineration. This dangerous and expensive source of energy should not count as a renewable energy source, nor should it be given a shortened environmental review period. Although the incinerator industry insists that burning garbage is a safe way to provide energy, the reality is that garbage incineration produces hazardous pollutants like dioxin and mercury and would displace important resources for truly clean energy sources like solar and wind. Contact your Representative and tell him or her to oppose H.R. 4513, because would make it easier to build new garbage incinerators and limit the opportunity for the public to comment on these energy projects. Take Action Help stop a new bill in the House of Representatives that would make it easier to build new garbage incinerators, H.R. 4513. Please call your Representative TODAY to tell him or her that we should not roll back environmental reviews for new waste incinerators. . You can reach your Representative by calling the Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. Sample Rap "Hi, My name is ______ and I live in _____. I'm calling to urge Representative _____ to oppose H.R. 4513. This bill would repeal the heart of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for certain energy projects, including garbage incinerators, and limit the opportunity for the public to comment on these energy projects. H.R. 4513's definition of "renewable energy project" allows garbage incineration, which releases dioxins, mercury, lead, PCBs, and other harmful chemicals into the environment, to count as renewable energy. Garbage incineration is neither clean nor renewable. Will the Representative oppose H.R. 4513? I urge her/him to vote against this bill when it is brought to the floor. Thank you for your time." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ David Wood Executive Director, GrassRoots Recycling Network Organizing Director, Computer TakeBack Campaign 210 N.
