I would urge that the proper comparison is not landfilling vs incineration with 
energy recovery.  After all, landfilling can be accompanied by capture, clean 
burning and sale of biogasses.  That gives you some clean (and on some 
definitions, but not others, renewable) energy without the negatives of 
incineration.
