Hi Sharon, In answer to your question, yes, I do believe what I posted. I wouldn't have wasted the time to write it if I didn't. While these issues may seem off-topic to a recycling list, they actually underly most of the policy prescriptions that list members advocate for and implement. As such, I do think it is useful every once in awhile to actually discuss them overtly. Your strong negative reaction to the use of market forces in achieving positive outcomes has made me quite curious to hear about your preferred world view, to which you referred to in your message. Might you be willing to share some of the main elements? -What would your ideal system for making goods and providing services, and for creating the jobs people need to earn a living, look like? Is there an existing model where this system has been implemented? -How would it encourage efficient production, appropriately reward people for their efforts, provide incentives for risk taking and generating new technologies, prevent waste of scarce investment resources, and meet all the various social criteria like environmental protection? -How would it avoid the problems you see endemic in market capitalism? -How would it avoid the problems that many socialist economies find themselves in? I was merely wondering if he really believed what he had written. If so, his world view is incredibly different from mine, and I find that interesting. Personally, I like mine better -- but he's perfectly entitled to his opinion. Sharon Gates Recycling Specialist City of Long Beach, California 562/570-4694 |
