[greenyes] Let's get some co-sponsors on Sen Jeffords' bill - Please!

Dear Green Yesers,

Once again we are writing to ask you to call or write your US Senators
urging them to co-sponsor Sen. Jim Jeffords' Beverage Producer
Responsibility Act.

You will find a Summary of the bill, a sample letter (including one
paragraph for letters going to senators representing a bottle bill state),
and a one-page document titled "The Impact of the Beverage Producer
Responsibility Act on Existing Bottle Bill States" on our website at:
www.bottlebill.org

Please note that we have made a slight change to the original 1-page doc
sent to you in August. Several individuals thought it would be more accurate
to state the both the additional and the total energy savings that would be
realized with an 80% recycling rate for beverage containers, acknowledging
the fact that there are already substantial savings at the current recycling
levels. The new paragraph reads as follows:

"Under a national bottle bill with an 80% recycling rate, a total of 53
million barrels of crude oil equivalent (bcoe) could be saved annually.
This number includes the 28 million bcoe in energy savings already being
realized from existing recycling efforts, and 25 million bcoe in additional
energy savings due to the national bottle bill. 25 million bcoe is
sufficient to meet the total residential energy needs of 1.4 million
American households for a year."

Sen. Jeffords had planned to introduce the bill in September, but has moved
the date back to mid October. There is still a little time (but not much
time) to get additional co-sponsors. We have been assured by Jeffords'
staff that this bill will not impact existing bottle bill states, other than
requiring them to expand their laws to include all containers except milk
and to increase the deposit to 10 cents.

If you are a member of an organization, PLEASE, encourage your members to
contact their senators as well. Ask your spouse, your business associates,
next door neighbor, anyone and everyone you can think of to do the same.

We should, at the VERY LEAST, be able to generate dozens letters and phone
calls to every senator of a bottle bill state.

Thanks in advance for your help and PLEASE feel free to forward this email
on to 20 or 30 (or more) of your closest friends.

Many happy returns,

Pat Franklin
