DECLARE INDEPENDENCE FROM HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS

Action deadline: June 30, 2003

Dear Activist,

Sign the "U.S. Declaration of Independence from Hazardous Chemicals" and speak out for better controls on chemicals that could harm people and wildlife around the world, including eagles, whales, seals, and dolphins.

We'll deliver the declaration to President Bush right before the Fourth of July Independence Day holiday. He needs to hear from you because his administration is working hand-in-hand with the chemical industry to block progress on a landmark European Union effort to regulate dangerous chemicals.

The European Union has released draft legislation that could transform the management of chemicals, increasing protection for wildlife and human health, while providing significant benefits for American consumers as well. We'll present the signatures to the European Commission to demonstrate the depth of U.S. public support for safer alternatives to hazardous chemicals.

Sadly, existing laws fall far short of protecting people and the environment from the toxic chemicals that are all around us. People and wildlife can suffer devastating consequences from these contaminants, including altered neurological and sexual development, impaired reproduction, and weakened immune systems.
