[greenyes] High levels of flame retardants in women and infants
Two recently published studies in Indiana and California found high levels
of flame retardants in the blood of women and women-infant pairs, according
to two studies published in Environmental Health Perspectives, with a
summary on the Internet at http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/press/031003.html. The
chemicals, known as PBDEs, are said to have similar health and environmental
effects as PCBs.

The flame retardants are used in a variety of sources, including computers
and other electronic equipment, polyurethane foam, and clothing, and the
summary suggests that the results may be the unintended consequence of
regulations to provide non-flammable furniture and clothing.
