All of our network laser printers, we have six of varying ages and
abilities, have the option to print in a way that saves toner. It is in the
printer set up menu. My personal (home) inkjet printers also have this
feature in print set up.
I'm not sure you would need a special program for most printers.

absolutely! it is possible with many printers, like the HP that I use, to
have a "draft"
print (which looks a lot like the old dot matrix print!); and normal and
best quality - the
toner usage changes markedly for these three types...
