The beauty of skepticism: If it turns out to be a scam, you can say "I told you so." If it turns out to be a breakthrough, you can say "one can never be too careful."
The downside is if it is a scam, a few people might get rich, it will soon go away, and we will never hear about it again. If it is a breakthrough, it will be bought out by Exxon, a few people might get rich, it will soon go away, and we will never hear about it again. (Now that is a cynic speaking.)
