Coke Gets Into Recycling Act
9/5/2002

A "Green Team" of volunteers organized by the Sprite brand of the Coca-Cola Co., Atlanta, helped recycle half a ton of material at a recent concert in that city.

The Green Team collected the material at 75 recycling bins placed at last week's Liquid Mix concert at Atlanta's HiFi Buys Amphitheater. Plastic soft drink and water bottles were among the recyclables collected.

Coca-Cola conducted the program as an experiment in away-from-home recycling. Most concert venues around the country don't regularly collect recyclables, according to the company.

At the concert, Coca-Cola organized Green Team volunteers to direct containers into recycling bins and reward concert-goers "caught in the act" of recycling. "In the end, we kept half a ton of plastic and cardboard from Georgia landfills that wouldn't have been recycled without the Green Team," says Heather Shaw of Widmeyer Communications, an agency that worked with Coke to conduct the recycling effort.

The Liquid Mix Tour concludes on Sunday, Sept. 8 at San Francisco's Shoreline Amphitheatre, where another Green Team will lead an away-from-home recycling campaign, according to Shaw.

The Liquid Mix tour played in 15 cities during August in September featuring pop music acts such as Jay-Z, the Roc-a-Fella Family, Hoobastank, Nappy Roots, N.E.R.D., Nonpoint and Talib Kweli.

In addition to live music, the six-hour events have also featured street-type skaters, BMX bikers, urban graffiti artists, an urban fashion show and a video gaming area.
