[GreenYes] composting paper bags?

I got this inquiry.  Does anyone have a definitive answer?  The large
brown paper bags for collecting yard waste can be composted.  Any reason
not to compost grocery store paper bags?

Are the brown paper bags you get at the grocery store safe to compost? I

like to reuse and recycle them but sometimes they get food-based oil on
them and I hate to just throw them out.
