[GreenYes] Paper plates and paper cups: What are they coated with?

I'd like to know a bit about paper plates, paper cups, and paper bowls.
Are all coated with something?  What is the coating?  Does the coating
prevent the paper from being recycled in a mixed paper waste stream?
What about in a paperboard waste stream?
