Personally, I don't think it's possible to "assign," in any taxing structure,
environmental costs to products. However, I think it may be possible to get
closer to responsibility and truth.
One easy current example is Enron.
Enron distorted markets, manipulated politicians, and influenced law-making,
all in secret and in the name of "free markets." As long as rule-making and
legislation creation on domestic issues like these can be made by our
government in secrecy, Enron will of course be only one in the ongoing
history of deceptive capitalism.
Light and air cure a lot of disease.
Here in the Pacific Northwest it's always entertaining to see how the loudest
"free-market" and "private property rights" guys are those grazing on public
lands, cutting our national forests, and sucking up our public water
resources.
