A few quick and simple ideas -
1) Move the disposable cups so they are harder to find, and put the glasses
right up front.
2) Make sure the cafeteria keeps enough glasses on hand to meet demand at
lunch and dinner, so the students don't use the disposables because that's
all that's available.
3) Put up a sign that asks students to please use glasses in the dining
room in order to conserve the resources.
4) Find a club to sell re-usable Hollins plastic cups or water bottles and
raise money for a cause - ask the cafeteria to sell the cups or refill them
at a discount.
You've gotten some other good ideas, too. For buying recycled paper, I'm
sure there are paper manufacturers in Virginia - the Conservatree website
may list them. Contact those local vendors and ask them about volume
discounts. Compare prices for recycled content and don't forget the other
attributes as well - bleaching, post-consumer vs. pre-consumer content, etc.
What are the other schools in the area you could partner with? Radford, VA
Tech, community colleges, tech schools? If they have programs in place you
could ask for their help, and if they don't maybe you could convince them to
join you for the volume discounts or savings on shipping.
Where do you take the containers you are collecting now? Will you be adding
paper recycling to go with buying recycled paper? Congratulations on your
efforts and keep up the good work!

the cafeteria should encourage reusable cups by charging less for drinks in
them and more for drinks in disposable cups. Keep in mind that foam cups
really aren't any worse than paper disposables, so to switch from foam to
paper isn't any good or any help either.

on college campus?
Hi all. I am a new subscriber, as well. Just a
couple quick requests for advice...
I run the newly-brought-back recycling program on my
small liberal arts college campus. We have begun a
mixed paper recycling project that is supported by the
administration. Since we have no curbside recycling
in our county, dedicated students recycle and
transport as many aluminum cans (we only get 30 cents
a pound here--I made $6 the other day off of an entire
carload of crushed cans--very depressing), glass
bottles and plastic items as we can collect.
I am meeting with the president of the school, as well
as the director of the "physical plant" next week and
I'd like to propose some reasons why the school should
buy recycled paper that will hopefully overwhelm the
lure of inexpensive "virgin" paper.
Also, how do I convince students on campus to stop
using the styrofoam cups the cafeteria puts out in the
dining hall? Lots of students use them in the
cafeteria rather than use glass cups--I think the real
purpose of the styrofoam cups is for taking cups out
of the cafeteria, but plenty of girls use them
unnecessarily (not that taking them out of the
cafeteria is necessary, either--bring your own cup!).
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Laura English
