Thank you folks for your contributions....
ALUMINIUM
8. 60 million aluminium cans are sold in Ireland every year.
9. Turning old cans into new cans saves 95% of the energy needed to make cans from ore.
10. One recycled aluminium can saves enough electricity to run a computer or a TV for three hours.
11. Most of the bauxite ore used to make aluminum cans is mined in the tropics including tropical forests. Recycling aluminum helps save tropical forests.
12. Tropical forests cover less than 12% of the earth’s land surface and provide habitat for 50-90% of the world’s species.
13. RAINFOREST
14. Coffee, bananas, rice, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, chocolate, sugar, spices, wicker, rubber, vanilla, oranges, lemons, limes and peanuts are some of the products that were discovered in tropical rain forests.
15. One fourth of all drugs prescribed contain derivatives from tropical forest plants.
16. We have already destroyed half of the original rain forest. At the current rate of destruction (95 acres every minute) we will completely eradicate all rainforests by the year 2050.
17. The rainforest is important as it absorbs vast amounts of carbon dioxide and so lessens the effect of global warming.
18. GLOBAL WARMING
20. This Carbon dioxide is causing global warming.
21. Some of the predicted effects of global warming would be a rise in sea level, flooding , extreme weather patterns, storms, hurricanes, changes in vegetation, an increase in the extinction rate of animals and destruction of marine life.
22. . It is predicted that as the ozone layer thins, there will be an increase in cases of skin cancer, and eye cataracts.
23. PAPER
24. Every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees and 2 barrels of oil (enough fuel to run the average car for 1,260 miles
25. Globally, the pulp and paper industry pumps 100,000 tons of acid rain producing sulphur dioxide into the air each year.
26. Making paper from recycled materials results in 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution.
27. PLASTIC
28. A ton of PET plastic containers made with recycled plastic conserves about 7,200 KW of electricity, thereby reducing pollution from power stations.
29. Microfibre fleece , used for pullovers , hats and scarves, is made from recycled plastic PET bottles.
30. Recycled Pet bottles can be used to make stuffing for padded jackets- five 2ltr bottles makes enough fibrefill for one jacket.
31. Other products that are being made from recovered plastic bottles include drainage pipes, toys, filler for pillows, sleeping bags and quilts, construction fencing, plastic lumber, and desk accessories.
32. Over 1.26 billion plastic bags are used in Ireland every year.
33. Cling films made from PVC contains harmful plasticisers which can leak into fatty food into which it is wrapped eg. Cheese.
34. GLASS
35. 3.5 million glass containers are used in Waterford City every year.
36. Recycling glass saves 25-32% of the energy used to make it.
37. Every glass jar that we recycle saves enough energy to light a 100 watt lightbulb for four hours.
38. WASTE OIL
39. It is easier and cheaper to recycle used oil than to make new oil from
40. crude. One gallon of used oil can produce the same amount of motor oil as 42 gallons of crude oil while requiring about a third of the energy.
41. Used oil can be re-refined into good-as-new lubricating oil. Oil never
42. wears out, it just gets dirty.
43. GENERAL
44. For every £1,000 of fast food sales, 200 pounds of packaging waste is created.
45. The cost of building an incinerator is three times that of recycling facilities that can handle the same amount of trash.
46. Recycling creates six times as many jobs as landfilling.
47. One out of every 10 pounds we spend at stores is for packaging.

19. The global burning of fossil fuels in one year releases 6 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air.
