TITLE:     Secretary, Commission on the Environment
APPOINTMENT TYPE:   Permanent Exempt
APPLICATION DUE DATE:  September 14, 2001 or until filled (Deadline

SALARY RANGE:    $51,350 - $62,426

BACKGROUND:

The Commission on the Environment (COE) sets the policies for the
Department of the Environment for the City and County of San Francisco.
The COE is a body of seven members, each of which serves a four-year
term, appointed by the Mayor. The Commission reviews, investigates and
makes recommendations to policies proposed for adoption by any City
agency regarding conformity with the long-term plan for environmental
sustainability. The Commission Secretary provides support to the COE and
its committees; corresponds with the public, media and other government
officials; researches policies and provides policy support; and performs
other duties requested by the Commissioners or Director of the
Department.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

The Commission Secretary assists with research and drafting of
environmental resolutions; researches and provides background
information on upcoming agenda items; prepares reports and makes
recommendations; researches and provides updates on environmental
legislation; reviews, tracks, and reports on ordinances, resolutions,
rules and procedures.

The Commission Secretary responds to and maintains contact with
community members; promotes and publicizes COE activities; schedules
meetings in various communities; maintains COE web site; represents the
Commission to the public, media and other government officials;
maintains and expands the Departmental contact information and
distribution list.

The Commission Secretary manages the departmental data base; posts
notices, prepares and distributes minutes for meetings; assists in
coordinating hearings and setting agendas; staffs meetings and/or task
forces; acts as back-up for public inquiries (reception/phones);
maintains accurate minutes, notices, records and files; alerts and
informs COE to deadlines, requirements, rules and regulations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, AND
2. Two (2) years of verifiable professional experience related to the
position
3. Any combination of education and experience as described above
equivalent to six years.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Considerable knowledge of administration; modern office methods and
procedures; charter provisions and ordinances pertaining to the
Commission and its related activities.
Experience using software applications such as word processing and
databases.
Familiarity with local environmental issues and organizations.
