A number of good ideas regarding unsolicited mail have been offered. I have
one comment regarding Nancy Carper's idea. Unfortunately, in many cases
direct-mail senders never actually see or receive the responses that people
send back. The return mail typically goes to a "fulfillment house" that is
geared up to take and process orders. That's why hundreds of magazines use
P.O. boxes in Boulder, Colorado, where some of the world's largest
fulfillment houses operate. Thus, in many cases the parties we need to
educate (unsolicited mail senders) will not get the message if you send back
the mailing. (One minor comment: all the big fulfillment houses operate
large-scale internal recycling systems.)
