I have already responded to Dale directly, but I wanted to share more with
the list. I work with a company that has worked to develop roofing shingle
recycling. We have partnered with a paving contractor here in Atlanta that
is able to use ground shingles in some road paving mixes. We have proven
that the process works, but unfortunately, the machinery required to recycle
these shingles is expensive to purchase, use and to maintain. Presently we
have to charge a $26 per ton tipping fee. This is in direct competition
with an impossibly cheap C&D landfill tipping fee of $4 per cubic yard.
And, therefore, our successes have been limited.

I wouldn't imagine that Dale will be able to find anyone to take his supply
of shingles for free. According to my sources landfill tipping fees need to
be in the $20-$30 range to make recycling economically competitive, so if
that's the case in his area, I would suggest he start to look for a paving
contractor who might be interested in learning about using shingles in their
paving mixes.

I have a feeling that tipping fees in his area won't support recycling.
Though most sanitary landfill tipping fees are above the $20-$30 range
nationwide, C&D landfills, at least around here, are well below that
necessary range. I would be happy to know of any location that might have
conducive economic conditions for roofing shingle recycling, if anyone would
like to contact me to learn more about what we do.
