Group seeks stop to Canadian dump
TORONTO, Ontario (CP) - Ontario's Environmental Assessment Board should not
have approved a plan to dump Toronto's garbage in an abandoned northern
Ontario mine without agreeing on the environmental risk, a court hearing
heard Tuesday. The Adams Mine Intervention Coalition wants a three-judge
panel to cancel the board's 1998 approval until more studies can be done.
The coalition asked for the review last September after the provincial
board approved a plan to ship a million tons of garbage a year to the
Kirkland Lake area. The assessment board heard the garbage-mine proposal
would boost the economies of surrounding communities. But critics of the
plan say there's no foolproof system for containing the
garbage-contaminated water that could leach into the area's groundwater.
