TIME AFTER TIME TOUR (Green Building Design and Construction Practices)

Wednesday, June 9
9:00 am, 4 hours
All tours - $35
Reserve your place at registration.

You will travel back in time about 100 years on this two-part tour at the
Presidio of San Francisco. The Presidio was a military garrison from its
Spanish origins in 1776, until the departure of the U.S. Army in 1995.
>From 1870 until 1912, much of the refuse from the Presidio was dumped in the
marshlands along the edge of the bay. Then, in 1912, the trash was covered over
to prepare a site for the Panama Pacific Internationl Exposition in 1915.
Following the Exposition, the buidings were just knocked down and buried. The
site then became Crissy Field.

Today,100 years later, the National Park Service is conducting archaeological
excavations of that historic dump buried under Crissy
Field. These excavations are part of a restoration project for the wetlands
that once flowed along the bayfront long ago. You will be able to tour the
archaeological site, see some of the remains found in the dump during a visit
to
their lab, and leave with a new way of looking at trash. In a unique project
component for an archaeological excavation, you will learn what special efforts
are being taken to reuse and recycle elements of this historic waste flow.

Some of the materials you will have seen at the dump site came from the
Letterman Hospital, built in 1899. This is the next stop on our tour.
At the Letterman Hospital we will study the artful reuse of an historic
building. Now it is the home of the Thoreau Center for Sustainability.

This building provides us with an excellent example of the applications
of sustainability, reuse, and green building design in the rehabilitation of a
historic building. Based on the experiences of transforming an historic
hospital
to business offices, you will have an opportunity to learn about the materials
used in the rehabilitation project, problems overcome, and useful lessons
learned. The Thoreau Center was a seminal project for the conversion and
adaptive reuse of a certified historic structure. This project is part of a
plan established by the Presidio Trust for overall sustainable practices in
design and construction througout the Presidio. This is an excellent model of
the partnering of historic archaeology, architectural history, and the
exemplification of our goals of resource recovery and sustainablity.

We will be joining Historical Archaeologist, Leo Barker, U.S. Department
of the Interior, National Park Service, and Robert Wallace, Architect,
Presidio Trust, as we take a slightly different look at trash and treasures
used time after time. Come with us on Wednesday, June 9, at 9 am. You can
sign for the tour when you register. There is a $35 fee for all tours on
Wednesday. If before the conference you have any questions about the tour,
please contact Rebecca Brown, garreb@quiknet.com, or 530-661-5969.
