According to the 4/5/99 Plastics News, Millennium Chemicals has put its
polyethyelene division, Equistar, out
for sale during today's current depressed resin markets, even though it
only expects to get half of its value at this time.

Like Shell's announced and Eastman Chemical's rumoured earlier efforts
to sell their PET operations because of depressed markets, it graphically
demonstrates that if large virgin resin producers can't make money, it will
be even more difficult to do so for reclaimers.

This does not mean that we should dispair, but rather instead, redouble
our efforts to improve designs for recyclability and recycled content, both
of which can turn things around for recyclers.
