Love It or Live With It: Nuclear Power 20 Years After Three Mile

Twenty years after the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island
nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, most Americans
believe it can happen again. This was among the finding of a
survey conducted by the Sustainable Energy Coalition, a group of
30 national business, environmental, and consumer organizations
that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
Sixty percent of survey participants are opposed to the
building of any new nuclear power plants in America. Only six
percent would select nuclear power generated electricity, if
given the choice.
Sixty-seven percent of those surveyed felt that another such
nuclear accident was likely in America.
Joe Colvin, president and chief executive officer of the
Nuclear Energy Institute, disagrees, saying that "The industry
has come a long way in the two decades since Three Mile Island
sparked sweeping changes in the way we operate our plants. The
lessons we learned and our continued investments in our people
and training are paying off many times over."
Still, about half of the respondents favor phasing out of all
103 nuclear power plants by the year 2020.
