The use of PEN in high-volume plastic container applications appears somewhat
unlikely because of its cost (two or three times that of PET). More likely is
the use of other types of barriers, such as the polyamide used in the
Miller/Continental PET bottle, or the use of coatings. It is the case,
however, that Anheuser-Busch is looking at a PET/PEN application.

Preliminary research summarized at last November's SPE Plastics Recycling
Conference suggests that small amounts of PEN do not compromise the recycling
of PET for fiber applications. I suspect that the concern is far higher among
those reclaimers marketing FDA-approved post-consumer resin for food-contact
applications.

Again, PEN's steep cost is a major barrier to widespread use.
