WASTEMAKER AWARDS UPDATE

The first GRRN WasteMaker Award was issued in
September 1998 to Lexmark International for its Prebate
program which discourages recycling used cartridges
(as well as competition from remanufacturers). In December,
a letter from GrassRoots Recycling Network chair Rick Best
was mailed, along with GRRN's action alert on the Lexmark
Prebate program, to 100 state procurement officials.

As a result, Massachusetts has now included language
preventing Prebate-type cartridges in their purchasing
guidelines, while still protecting original equipment
manufacturer quality specifications. Congratulations,
Massachusetts!
