ENVIRONMENT COMMISSION AND BOARD OF SUPERVISORS=92 COMMITTEE URGE COCA-COLA
TO USE RECYCLED PLASTIC

(San Francisco, CA) =96 The Public Health and Environment Committee of the
San Francisco Board of Supervisors today passed Supervisor Gavin Newsom=92s
resolution calling on Coca-Cola to use recycled plastic in its bottles. The
resolution passed the Commission on the Environment on September 21, 1999.

Adoption of this resolution by the full Board on December 6 would mean the
city and county in the nation=92s fifth-largest media market is joining the
national campaign calling on Coca-Cola to fulfill its promise of 1990 to
support recycling by using recycled plastic in its bottles.

Coca-Cola is the world=92s largest soft drink maker, with 45 percent of the
U.S. market and 50 percent of the world market. In a year=92s time, over 10
billion plastic Coke bottles are discarded.=20

By using recycled plastic in its bottles, Coca-Cola would help San
Francisco and every other county in California meet a state requirement to
recycle 50% of its solid waste by the end of year 2000. San Francisco
currently recycles 40 percent of its solid waste.

"Coca-Cola is the industry leader. They should take the lead in using
recycled plastic and lead by example," said Francesca Vietor, Director of
the San Francisco Department of the Environment.

Supervisor Newsom=92s resolution is modeled on the Coca-Cola resolution
adopted by the Commission on the Environment (Resolution No. 009-9-99-COE)
on September 21, 1999.

A copy of the resolution is attached.
