With the 11 figure subsidies for virgin materials, you'll all be glad to
know that Congress has not been asleep. In a drive to find cash to fund
this year's goody bag, legislation is now pending, according to today's
Wall Street Journal, to eliminate -- no, not timber subsidies on public
lands -- but rather the subsidy for picking of wild matsutake mushrooms
from national forests. You may laugh, scoffers, but this subsidy is said to
total ... drum roll please... $12 million. Oh, yes there was one other
teensy weensy reason for targeting this subsidy. It was the only interest
that Congress could find which did not have a political action committee.
