SAN FRANCISCO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
RECYCLING PROGRAM o HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Position Available

San Francisco Residential & Special Projects Recycling Associate

Program Background: The San Francisco Solid Waste Management Program
includes both the Recycling and Hazardous Waste Management Programs. The
Recycling Program promotes and supports programs to reduce, reuse and
recycle discarded materials in San Francisco, including meeting the state
mandate to reduce waste by 50% by the year 2000.

Position Description: The associate will assist the Residential & Special
Projects Recycling Coordinator in performing professional level work in the
residential and other sectors including:
=85 Developing, piloting, improving, expanding and promoting source reduction=
,
reuse, recycling, composting and market development programs;
=85 Facilitating projects with refuse haulers, recycling organizations,
community groups and government agencies;
=85 Presenting waste prevention and recycling information to the public and
responding to inquiries, comments and complaints regarding recycling
services;
=85 Soliciting, evaluating and writing proposals, and managing grants and
contracts;
=85 Researching, analyzing, preparing and responding to reports and surveys;
=85 Updating reuse and recycling directories;
=85 Evaluating refuse rate studies and applications related to recycling;
=85 Coordinating seasonal and one-time waste prevention and recycling
campaigns; and
=85 Providing administrative support.

Minimum Qualifications:
=85 Bachelors degree in a related field;
=85 Knowledge of recycling, solid waste management and environmental
principles;
=85 Excellent writing, speaking, researching, organizational and project
management skills;
=85 Responsible, motivated and able to work independently and in a team; and
=85 Word processing, spreadsheet and database proficiency.

Desirable qualifications:
=85 Familiarity with San Francisco;
=85 Cantonese, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese or Russian fluency; and
=85 Local government or nonprofit experience.

Duration: One year beginning October 21, 1999. Stipend: $13 per hour fo=
r
40 hours per week.
