This Action Request is being forwarded by Pat Birnie of the WILPF
Environment Committee, from Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project:

PLEASE COMMENT TO FDA ON FOOD IRRADIATION BEFORE JULY 18

The FDA has already approved food irradiation processing for chicken,
beef, certain fruits and vegetables (thanks to heavy lobbying from
agri-businesses and nuclear industry). Present FDA regulations require that
whole foods that have been irradiated must carry a label that states it has
been irradiated, and also the RADURA, the international symbol.
Those vested interests have now asked the FDA to change labeling
requirements to call it "Cold Pasteurization." Real pasteurization is a
totally different process involving rapid heating and cooling of the
product and in no way represents the process of food irradiation and causes
none of the damage to food that irradiation causes. The comment period on
this requested change has been extended to July 18.
Please write the FDA urging retention of the present CLEAR labeling
requirement, and not allow weakening with the proposed change. Talking
points include: Absence of present statement & radura would be MISLEADING
because CONSUMERS HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW how our food has been processed.
(Especially since: Irradiation destroys vitamins and causes changes in
sensory and spoilage qualities that are not obvious or expected by the
consumer. Irradiation creates a new class of unique radiolytic products
that have never been tested for the possible carcinogenic effects on
humans. The irradiation process creates new volumes of radioactive waste
from Cobalt-60 and Cesium, adding to the burden we already don't know what
to do with, and exposes workers unnecessarily.)
Urge the FDA to require truthful labeling indefinitely. New consumers
(young people, immigrants) need to be aware of processing options at the
time of purchase. Ask FDA to post all comments on their website.
Write to: Dockets Management Branch (HFA-305); Food and Drug
Administration; 5630 Fishers Lane, Room 1061; Rockville, MD 20852 Re:
Docket No. 98N-1038, "Irradiation in the Production, Processing, and
Handling of Food" or send an e-mail to FDADockets@oc.fda.gov and/or
FDADockets@fda.gov (Put Docket # 98N-1038 in the subject line)
