PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT - April 27, 1999

CONFERENCE AND TRADE SHOW TO FOCUS ON CREATING ENVIRONMENTALLY
RESPONSIBLE BUILDINGS

Philadelphia Self-Reliant is sponsoring "Design & Construction 2000:
Sustainable Products Conference and Trade Show" to promote and increase
the purchase of environmentally preferable products and systems for use
in building renovation and new construction projects in the Greater
Philadelphia area. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region
III, is funding the conference and trade show which will be held at the
Philadelphia Marriott Hotel, 1201 Market Street, Philadelphia, on
November 18, 1999.

What's in store for participants?

Educational presentations focused on real world experiences in
sustainable building design, construction, renovation and maintenance.
Face to face interaction with product manufacturers of items such as
paints without paints without toxic fumes, carpets made from recycled
plastic bottles, flooring made from recycled tires, heating systems that
use alternative energy sources like the sun, and windows that have the
insulating value of most walls.

"These products are not futuristic building materials, these are off the
shelf products, many of which are competitively priced when compared with
traditional, resource and energy inefficient materials," said Linda
Knapp, Executive Director of Philadelphia Self-Reliant. Design &
Construction 2000: Sustainable Products Conference and Trade Show will
put these products on center stage and raise awareness about the benefits
and feasibility of completing environmentally sound development and
redevelopment projects.

The show is for building owners, tenants, architects, engineers,
contractors, public agencies, and business and home owners interested in
improving the work and living environment through improved indoor air
quality (no more sick buildings), reduced operating costs (lower utility
and maintenance costs), and increased facility life.

The City of Philadelphia is working with the conference and trade show
organizers to highlight the sustainable and cost saving steps that the
City has taken, including the GreenLights Program, Energy Star Buildings
Program, Rebuild America, and the Recycled Product Procurement
initiative. The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Philadelphia
Chapter, Committee on the Environment, and the Greater Philadelphia
Commercial Recycling Council will also assist in conference and trade
show organization.

The educational sessions will assist public and private entities in
understanding the value of sustainable design and identify available
design tools and products. Participants will also have the opportunity to
view video case studies and meet industry leaders such as Barry Dimson,
President and CEO of EcoSmart Healthy Properties, LLC, who served as
environmental consultant on the first U.S. "green" hotel, the Rittenhouse
Square Sheraton, located in downtown Philadelphia. Interested exhibitors
and participants should contact Philadelphia Self-Reliant at
215/546-0724.
