Re: [GRRN] Mobro Answer - NYC

As I recall, Mobro ended up back home in Long Island, its ill-fated contents
incinerated and the load buried somewhere in our collective dumb-conscious.

Another barge of ill-repute, the Khian Sea, carrying a load of Philadelphia
incinerator ash, also floated all over the high seas for several years
(1986-1988), suspiciously losing portions of its contents over time (and over
board). It disappeared for a time too because its owners changed its name.

Eventually, its tasty cargo was "landfilled" in Haiti (that rich, industrial
nation that knows how to take care of it's environment and can't be
intimidated by racketeers from North America) where it sat for a decade (A
Decade!) until last year when environmentalists began to question whether it
had really been buried appropriately.

I won't go into the story about how Philadelphia's great Mayor, Ed Rendell,
refuses to take responsibility for this waste (afterall, we had a "good"
contract with a NYC waste company and he wasn't in charge when the deals went
down).

Suffice it to say that Mobro's little cousin Khian is still an issue after
more than 10 years. They can't decide whether to entomb the ash or dig it up
and take it somewhere else.

God bless us one and all!
