Subject: Provident Power Proposal to build co-generation
incinerator in Somerset county near Pocomoke City
Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 17:38:33 -0500
From: "John Schermerhorn/Laureate" <laureate@shore.intercom.net>

I am a citizen of Somerset County in the State of Maryland. Recently a
company named "Provident Power" (a start up company) incorporated in
Delaware has verbally proposed to our county commissioners to build a
1400
ton per day incinerator on property near the Somerset County/ Pocomoke
City
line. This incinerator would or allededly is intended to burn building
rubble. I do not think that this county already having difficulty with
chicken manure waste disposal issues due to its alleged relationship to
toxic pfisteria outbreaks in Chesapeake tributaries, is a suitable site
to
import pollution via rail, truck and barge. No hearings or permit
proccessing hearings have yet to be scheduled however they will no
doub't in
time.
If you would be so kind to recommend specific research and/or citizen
action
material which would enlighten me and my neighbors on the hazzards of
incinerators, the issue of co-generation using waste, the probable
health
and economic threats to our community and our neighbors I would be very
grateful. Just prior to this company targeting Somerset County they
tried to
site in Cecil County Maryland and were allegedly "run out of town" due
to
many questions regarding their proposal. Somerset County is somewhat
politically ruralfied with high minority base and "old county
commissoner"
type government who probably see $$$$$ first and perhaps the alleged
additional jobs a megolith incinerator allegedly brings. My instinct
tells
me they bring traffic, bad air, decreased property values and a threat
to
the citizens quality of life. Also this area is very sensitive
ecologically.

Your adivce would be appreciated as to the specific materials which
would
educate me on things like de-regulation of electric, how incinerators
hinder
recycling and why ash and emmissions are a threat.

THANK YOU
