NYC Mayor softens stand on garbage
NEW YORK (AP) - New York City's mayor appears to have put a lid on talk
that other states have a duty to haul away city garbage since
out-of-towners take advantage of the Big Apple's resources. "I never said
they were obligated to do it," Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Monday. "We pay
them for it; this is a business. This isn't a question of obligation."
Giuliani's remarks seem to be a retreat from his controversial statements
last week in which he claimed that since tourists benefit from spending
time in New York, they also should accept New York trash. See full story
