City of San Jose, Environmental Services Department TEMPORARY JOB OPPORTUNITY
Water Supply Analyst
Background. The Department seeks a qualified candidate to assist the=20 program manager in communicating information on water supply issues and to= =20 organize state-wide efforts on positions that are consistent with the City= =C9s=20 water policy. The position will be responsible for the collection and=20 analyzing of information on the proposed alternative options for=20 comprehensive long-term solutions to restore the health and vitality of the= =20 fragile environment while providing water for urban uses related to water=20 supply and reliability.
Job Responsibilities: =FA Assist the manager of the Conservation and Resource Management Program= in=20 the preparation of papers updating and analyzing information on water usage= =20 reduction trends, water supply and reliability from the City=C9s= perspective. =FA Represent the City and the Department in the absence of the program=20 manager at District stakeholder meetings. =FA Assist in the development of materials for presentations to the public= and=20 the City Council as needed. =FA Assist the Department in encouraging support of local and regional=20 initiatives to produce and supply recycled water and conservation of water. =FA Promote recognition for financial incentives which will be important in= =20 reducing wastewater flows to Bay, augmenting available water supplies and=20 alleviating future water shortages.
Job Qualifications: A B.A./B.S. degree is required. Any combination of=20 training and experience equivalent to a bachelor=C9s degree from an= accredited=20 college or university with appropriate coursework for assigned duties, and= =20 one (1) year of experience promoting and participating in the implementation= =20 of environmental services programs. Desirable knowledge, skills and=20 abilities include: a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and=20 purposes of environmental management including integrated waste water=20 management, water resource management and environmental protection, good=20 written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work=20 independently.
Salary and Employment Term: The hourly rate for this unbenefitted position= =20 is $23.56 for an annual salary of approximately $49,000. The candidate=20 selected is expected to commit to this full-time position through calendar= =20 year 1998. The employment term may be extended to 1999, but will not exceed= =20 2 years.

Energy Efficiency Project Coordinator
Position Description: The Department seeks a qualified candidate to manage= =20 and coordinate an energy efficiency project for the City. This project is= =20 funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Its=20 purpose to is to explore how local governments can expand the energy=20 efficiency choices of their communities in the newly restructured utility=20 market. Responsibilities include developing municipal strategies for=20 extending community energy efficiency services, applying for State and=20 federal energy funds, coordinating with City staff on various project tasks,= =20 managing consultant contracts, coordinating meetings of project partners,=20 managing the DOE grant, and satisfying the grant=C9s quarterly reporting=20 requirements.
Job Qualifications: A B.A./B.S. is required. Any combination of training= =20 and experience equivalent to a bachelor=C9s degree from an accredited= college=20 or university with appropriate coursework for assigned duties, and one (1)= =20 year of experience promoting and participating in the implementation of=20 environmental services programs. Desirable knowledge, skills and abilities= =20 include: a thorough understanding of California=C9s electric utility=20 restructuring, relevant experience in the field of energy or energy=20 efficiency, proposal writing experience, budget management experience,=20 proficiency in MS Word, good report writing skills, and the ability to work= =20 independently.

The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts is developing a long term=20 strategic plan for its recycling and waste reduction programs. I am hoping to come up with a brief but inspiring mission statement to=20 describe our recycling and waste reduction efforts. I realize=20 that each community will have a mission tailored to its own needs,=20 but if anyone has a good mission statement they'd like to share, it=20 would help us as we think about this. Thanks.
