Actually, no. That's Mitsubishi Corporation, a separate company (since
1946). But because of the name link, Tachi has gotten involved in pressing
that company to make changes as well. There is great hope among many of us
that MC will pull out of that project, and I'm certainly an advocate of that.
It will require continued efforts, however. MC has no consumer products and
is difficult to reach. But they do take notice of calls and letters from the
environmental community, and change is beginning to take shape.

Ms. Nynatten wrote on 3-19 inquiring about this. In 1992, the Town of Cary
NC constructed about 2mi. of trail @ Swift Creek Greenway using primarily
recycled materials in all categories -- benches, paving, base paving.
Greenways Inc. the designer/contractor did an extensive analysis of the
project w/ comparative costs, etc. Their website is: greenways@aol.com and
their email address is greenwys@aol.com.

The MD lesislature is considering sunsetting it's tire surcharge now that the
state has cleaned up about a milion tires. I guess that the state believes
that no more tires will be dumped. Besides, it appears that not all the
money that was collected was used for tire purposes. Sometimes it's hard to
understand some rationales...

Maybe the way to close the tire loop is to make tires out of steel belts
without the rubber. ;^]

North Carolina also has a tire surcharge that is due to expire this
year as most tire sites have also been cleaned up here. A bill has
been introduced, however, which would extend the surcharge, with a
portion of the revenue going to market development of tires. This
amounts to a sizeable amount of money over the next three years;
enough, I believe to establishing the end markets for tires without
having to burn them. There seems to be little opposition to the bill
and we expect it to pass. If you would like a copy of the bill, please
e-mail me.
